correct_sidedness Ostendorf believes the hair was cropped short to facilitate the February 1865 casting of Lincoln's head by Clark Mills. Such a late date seems unlikely. Compared to Lincoln's emaciated appearance in other Feb. 1865 photographs, he looks much better here.
