"His features 'prettified' with India ink, Lincoln is almost unrecognizable. ... The original photograph ... is nearly obliterated by the artist's ink 'improvements'" Ostendorf '98 [p 39]. A "restored" version of the image is presented: "The removal of the heavy India-ink lines and the strengthening of the original sepia tones have restored the portrait almost to its original appearance" Ostendorf '98 [p 39].
