(p 192) [[Gelatin silver print]] of a heavily retouched contemporary [[albumen print]] from a lost negative made by an [[unknown photographer]], in [[Springfield]], Illinois, during May or June 1860.

[[Photograph]], probably by William [[Marsh]], [[Springfield]], May, 1860. Ostendorf notes: "With his features completely altered by retouching, Lincoln looks like a birdwatcher" Ostendorf '98. "His features 'prettified' with India ink, Lincoln is almost unrecognizable. ... The original photograph ... is nearly obliterated by the artist's ink 'improvements'" Ostendorf '98 [p 39]. A "restored" version of the image is presented: "The removal of the heavy India-ink lines and the strengthening of the original sepia tones have restored the portrait almost to its original appearance" Ostendorf '98 [p 39].
